Ashtanga Energetics
How do you feel at the end of your practice?
Exhausted or enlivened? Stiff and achy the next day, or lighter, more connected and ready to get on with your life?
We're often taught to associate a strong Ashtanga practice with effort and pushing through. But what if softening could create strength, and space could become support?
What if your practice gave you more energy than it took?
When we stop forcing and start paying attention, we can begin to recognise the habits of tension that keep us stuck — and discover a different way to move, breathe and practise.
Do you often feel stuck, stiff or like you're working harder than you need to?
Do you find yourself pushing through your practice, carrying tension or feeling depleted rather than enlivened?
Are you ready to find a different way — one that helps you work with your body, soften unnecessary effort and feel more connected, balanced and supported?
For years, I was constantly getting injured and feeling stiff and achy a day or two after practising. Even after years of Ashtanga, I was still trying harder.
I began to recognise how much stress and grief I was carrying in my body, and how my response was often to push through rather than listen.
So I explored another way of practising — with less force, more awareness and a deeper understanding of the relationship between breath, body, attention and energy.
Over time, my recurring injuries stopped, and my practice became something I loved not just while I was on the mat, but in the days that followed.
I also found a reason to practise that went far beyond achieving a pose.
Imagine a practice where you can move with less effort, respond to what your body needs, and find a greater sense of balance and ease.
What could change in six sessions?
Over six weeks, we'll explore the automatic responses that can leave us feeling stuck, stiff or working harder than we need to.
Through teaching, demonstration and guided practice, you'll discover how energetic direction, breath, bandha, drishti and awareness can change your experience of the postures.
You'll begin to recognise where you're holding unnecessary tension, explore different ways of organising your body and develop the confidence to make your practice work for you.
The aim isn't to remove challenge. It's to understand when effort helps, when it gets in the way, and how strength and softness can work together.
So that your practice becomes something that supports you — physically, mentally and energetically — rather than another thing to push through.

By the end of Ashtanga Energetics you will have learned…
-
01/ You'll see alignment differently.
Move beyond trying to reproduce the shape of a posture. Understand the principles that organise it, and discover how they apply to your own body.
-
02 / You'll learn to work with your body, not against it.
Explore ways to approach limitations, recurring discomfort and injury with greater awareness. Develop the confidence to adapt your practice rather than forcing yourself into a predetermined shape.
-
03/ You'll discover a new relationship with breath, bandha and drishti.
Understand how these elements work together, and how they can change the way you experience a posture — from the foundation to the direction of movement, from effort to ease.
-
04 / You'll learn to make your practice your own.
Recognise when you need to build energy, when to work more quietly and how to adapt your sequence to suit your needs. Begin to develop a practice that supports you, rather than one you simply try to keep up with.
-
05 / You'll develop a deeper connection with yourself.
As your awareness becomes more refined, you may notice not only physical changes, but a greater sense of connection, creativity and being more fully yourself..
-
06 / You'll learn to trust your own experience.
As your awareness becomes more refined, you may notice not only physical changes, but a greater sense of connection, creativity and being more fully yourself..
Is this for you?
This course is for you if:
You love Ashtanga but sometimes feel your practice has become mechanical.
You find yourself repeating the same patterns of tension, stiffness or discomfort.
You want to understand how to adapt your practice when something doesn't feel right.
You practise alone and want to develop more confidence in your own decisions.
You want to deepen your practice without simply adding more poses, drills or instructions.
You're curious about the energetic side of yoga, but want to explore it through the actual experience of practising.
You're ready to discover whether strength, softness and awareness can work together.
And you don't need to be young, exceptionally flexible or able to perform every posture.
Ashtanga isn't reserved for the naturally bendy, the very strong or those who can push the hardest.
It's a practice you can continue to explore throughout your life. The question is how you practise, not whether you fit an ideal.

WELCOME TO Ashtanga Energetics
HOW IT WORKS
Ashtanga Energetics isn't about adding more instructions to remember or more things to get right. It's a six-week exploration of the practice you already know, designed to help you understand what's happening within each posture — and discover how that understanding can change the way you practise.
Each week, we'll explore a different group of postures through teaching, demonstration and guided practice. You'll learn the principles, see how they work, and have time to experience them for yourself.
The aim isn't to give you another set of rules to follow. It's to help you develop your own understanding, so you can recognise what your body needs, make more informed choices and become more confident in your practice.
01 / Understand the principles
We'll explore energetic direction, breath, bandha, drishti and awareness — not as separate techniques to master, but as relationships that shape how you experience a posture.
02 / See what changes
Through demonstration, you'll explore how the same posture can feel very different depending on how you organise your body, direct your attention and work with your breath.
03 / Experience it in your own practice
You'll put these principles into practice through guided exploration of standing postures, forward folds, twists, backbends, arm balances and inversions. Rather than simply following instructions, you'll be encouraged to notice, question and feel what's happening for yourself.
04 / Make the practice your own
As your understanding develops, you'll have more ways to respond when something feels difficult, recognise when you're using unnecessary effort, and make choices that support your practice on any given day.
The goal is a practice that feels less mechanical and more connected — one you understand from the inside, rather than simply trying to reproduce the shape.
